Why is Chris Dodd still in Congress?
In yet another instance of "Why is S/he Still In Congress?",
let's investigate Chris Dodd, Senator from Connecticut, who certainly isn't one of
us. Dodd has involved himself in a combination of condescension, lying, and shady activity,
especially in recent years in areas ranging from alleged sweetheart mortgage dealings to
mindblowing statements regarding the irrelevance of nonpartisan budgeting.
Dodd was recently investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee amid allegations he received
preferential treatment from Countrywide regarding a mortgage he took out in 2003. As
reported by Politics Daily
(read the story):
After first denying it, Dodd has admitted that he knew he was receiving special treatment on
his loans as a "V.I.P.," but continues to deny that he sought any deal that would benefit him
financially.
We may be a little slow, but Mr. Dodd -- what exactly do "special treatment" and "V.I.P." mean
when talking about a MORTGAGE that doesn't involve, you know, financial benefit? That may be
the ultimate honest question.
We should note that the Senate Ethics Committee found no wrongdoing in Mr. Dodd's dealings.
On the other hand, as Glenn Beck brought to light on his Fox News program, there's no real
evidence the committee actually looked
(read the story).
In fact, as the AP reported, the committee refused even to sign a subpoena for the documents at all
(read the story).
If his shadiness doesn't get your goat, consider his remarks regarding the nonpartisan Congressional
Budget Office a few months back as they discussed the cost of comprehensive health reform as proposed
by Dodd and the rest of Congress:
"One of the things that's disappointing about CBO — and frustrating — is all the work... done
on prevention... you don't get the benefit in CBO of cost-savings with prevention
programs," Dodd said. They'll tell you how much an anti-smoking program may cost.
They don't tell you the benefit occurs when a number of people stop smoking."
A couple of points here...
- The CBO -- those letters stand for CONGRESSIONAL Budget Office. These are the career
budgeters hired as nonpartisans by Congress to try to find some reality in Congress's often
outrageous mathematics. Mr. Dodd, if you don't like or agree with the job they do, you
should lead the charge to FIRE and REPLACE them or, perhaps better yet, to CLOSE the CBO
down and save taxpayers a few bucks. They either do the job Congress needs them to do, or
they don't; which is it?
- When, again, was the last time any government act SAVED anyone any money?
We could actually go on and on about Mr. Dodd. But we pose the honest question:
why on Earth is he still in Congress?
