Why is John Conyers still in Congress?
In yet another instance of "Why is S/he Still In Congress?",
let's look at John Conyers, who votes to pass legislation he hasn't read. Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary
Committee, inquired to a group of on-lookers: "I love these members that get up and say, 'read the bill!'. What
good is reading the bill if it's a thousand pages and you don't have two days and two lawyers to find out what it
means after you read the bill?"
(watch it)
We have some honest questions, Mr. Conyers:
- If you don't read the bill, sir, then do you somehow know, to the letter, what's in the bill? If you do know,
HOW do you know?
- If something sinister is slipped into the bill for which you voted YES, should you be impeached?
- Do any of your colleagues agree with you? If so, which ones? We'd LOVE a list of congressmen who don't
read the bills they vote YES on.
- Who, pray tell, is WRITING the bills? Do you intrinsically TRUST those authors? Should WE?
It is our belief that any congressman who votes YES on ANY bill s/he hasn't read is shirking the very basic duty OF
a congressman and is not worthy of being a representative of any group of people in this country and should resign.
The danger is too great (and all too real) that a 1,000+ page bill is BOUND to contain SOMETHING objectionable that
does NOT properly represent the will of the voters of any district.
